Driving through the Mississippi Delta as a kid we’d pass through the hills of Carrollton on the road to Greenwood, then south to Belzoni. I couldn’t wait for that part of the drive as I would get lost in the kudzu, observing magical creatures in the shapes emerging from the hills. I was drawn to their arched necks, hunched gestures, the dance of nature’s wild. I continue to welcome these figures as they reveal themselves through the colors and shapes on the page. I move paint intuitively, then layer photographs, paper and disparate found images, creating organic-like forms; manifestations of things that dwell somewhere deep within and that are so difficult to describe with words. My work is tethered to my internal world and is revealed through a very tactile practice of discovery and assembly. My analogue collage practice allows me to challenge limited representations and explore new narratives within the familiar. I see my art as an energetic process allowing discovery, catharsis and celebration.
